About this position:

The District Superintendent Combined position functions in rural areas of South Dakota where NorthWestern Energy provides both natural gas and electric services. They are responsible for overall electric services in their area and often operate independently to address customer billing and utility concerns or to complete service orders. As a Combination District Superintendent, they typically provide electric and natural gas services and respond to gas emergencies, set up work orders, plan jobs, assist in the work as qualified, or supervise. If tasks exceed their qualifications, they may call for assistance from specialists such as Gas Technicians & Line Technicians. Superintendents must be able to work independently, manage projects, be on call, respond to emergencies as needed (including after hours), and work outside in all weather conditions.

About this job:

  • Communicate verbally and understand audible signals to maintain safety at the worksite and during emergency/safety situations
  • Troubleshoot power or gas outages and local electric and gas distribution or transmission problems
  • Complete service work related to all aspects of electric power line and gas distribution (as required and qualified)
  • Perform low or high-voltage electrical work (as required and qualified) and meter-related service work as needed
  • Install underground electric lines and retire overhead lines
  • Frame, install, or replace poles
  • Operate bucket trucks, climb poles, and work at heights to service lines or other equipment
  • Fix streetlights and ready-guard lights
  • Set gas or electric meters to monitor utility consumption for residential, commercial, and industrial clients
  • Cathodic system maintenance and repair
  • Maintenance and repair of gas distribution lines and equipment
  • Assist with the maintenance of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facilities
  • Interact with the public and help resolve customer-billing issues
  • Operate equipment, install pipe, and perform meter-related service work as needed
  • Maintain company facilities and property as required
  • Complete needed paperwork and computer data entry to address customer-billing issues and plan projects
  • Ability to assume a leadership role in response to emergency situations
  • Plan projects and direct crews to complete work in an area
  • Participate as a team member to complete work in an area
  • Fuse plastic pipes
  • Drive to installation locations
  • Adapt to technological changes as they are implemented
  • Perform rubber gloving; specific techniques for safely working with electric lines and equipment as qualified
  • Organize equipment and perform regular and preventative maintenance
  • Locate electric & gas facilities
  • Use appropriate PPE
  • Work overtime including on-call availability for evening and weekend shifts-especially in response to acute service needs
  • You must agree to live within an area approved by the company that allows for adequate response to our customers in call out and emergency situations
  • Other duties as assigned

Am I right for this job? Here's the success profile:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Natural gas and/or power line degree preferred
  • Ability to complete Operator Qualification requirements as assigned by the company to perform gas-related services and activities as stipulated by 49 CFR Part 192.
  • Ability to become plastic fusion certified within 12 months
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the ability to obtain upon request, and satisfactory driving record
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and safety rules
  • Commitment to safe working practices and knowledge of safety policies/procedures
  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Get Into Energy - Energy Industry Fundamental 2.0 certification is a plus (click the link to certify at no cost)
