Painter and Decorator

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Spray Painter with strong panel beating capabilities to join our team. This hands-on role is dedicated to refurbishing and upgrading our existing fleet of generators, fuel tanks, secure containers, and related metal equipment. The primary focus is applying high-quality, durable protective coatings using water-based (aqua-based) paint systems, while also performing necessary surface repairs, dent removal, and panel work to restore and prepare items for painting.

The ideal candidate will ensure a professional, long-lasting finish that enhances corrosion resistance, appearance, and compliance with safety/environmental standards in an industrial setting. This position requires precision, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently on large-scale metal surfaces in a workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities:

•  Surface Preparation & Panel Beating

•  Inspect generators, fuel tanks, secure containers, and other fleet items for damage, dents, rust, corrosion, or surface imperfections.

•  Perform panel beating tasks, including removing dents, straightening metal panels, filling holes/gouges, grinding, and smoothing surfaces to achieve a flawless base for painting.

•  Clean, degrease, sandblast (or mechanically abrade), sand, prime, and mask surfaces as required to ensure optimal paint adhesion and prevent future corrosion.

•  Paint Application

•  Select, mix, and apply water-based (aqua-based) paints and coatings using professional spray equipment (e.g., HVLP or air-assisted spray guns) to achieve even, drip-free coverage.

•  Apply multiple coats (primers, base coats, topcoats, and clear/protective layers where specified) following manufacturer guidelines and company standards for thickness, drying times, and curing.

•  Match colours, finishes, and branding requirements (e.g., company logos, safety markings, or identification labels) as needed.

•  Equipment & Quality Control

•  Set up, operate, clean, and maintain spray guns, mixing equipment, airless systems, and related tools to ensure consistent performance and compliance with safety regulations.

•  Conduct quality inspections at each stage (preparation, priming, painting, and final finish) to identify and correct defects such as runs, orange peel, overspray, or uneven coverage.

•  Perform minor repairs or touch-ups post-application and buff/polish finished surfaces for a professional appearance.

•  Safety, Compliance & Maintenance

•  Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental protocols, including proper use of PPE (respirators, suits, gloves), ventilation systems, and handling/disposal of paints, solvents, and hazardous materials.

•  Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered for inventory, compliance, and quality tracking.

•  Assist with workshop organization, tool maintenance, and material inventory as required.

•  Other Duties

•  Collaborate with maintenance, logistics, and operations teams to prioritize fleet items and coordinate scheduling.

•  Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, or improve finish quality.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

•  Proven experience as a Spray Painter in an industrial, automotive, heavy equipment, or metal fabrication setting (minimum 3–5 years preferred).

•  Demonstrated hands-on experience applying water-based (aqua-based) paints using spray techniques, with a strong understanding of their mixing, application, drying, and curing characteristics compared to solvent-based systems.

•  Solid panel beating experience, including dent removal, metal straightening, filling, sanding, and surface restoration on large metal structures or vehicles/equipment.

•  Familiarity with industrial coatings for metal surfaces (e.g., anti-corrosion primers, protective topcoats suitable for outdoor/exposed equipment like generators and fuel tanks).

•  Proficiency with spray equipment (HVLP, airless, conventional), mixing systems, sanding tools, grinders, and basic welding/brazing (advantageous but not mandatory).

Preferred Skills & Attributes:

•  Certification or training in industrial painting, spray techniques, or panel beating (e.g., relevant trade qualifications, VOC compliance, or manufacturer-specific training).

•  Knowledge of environmental regulations related to water-based paints, VOC emissions, and hazardous waste handling.

•  Ability to read technical drawings, specifications, or colour-matching requirements.

•  Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and commitment to producing high-quality, durable finishes.

•  Physically fit for standing, bending, lifting (up to 20–30 kg), and working in a workshop environment with potential exposure to paint fumes (despite controls).

Working Conditions:

•  Full-time position in a workshop/yard environment.

•  May involve occasional outdoor work or exposure to weather when handling fleet items.

•  Use of PPE and respiratory protection required at all times during painting tasks.
