Lead Mechanic Rigger - Steel America
 
Purpose:
 
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Lead Mechanic Rigger to support operations at our site in Norfolk, VA.
 
Job Description:
  • Communicate progress, problems or suggestions to supervisors and leads.
  • Suggest and/or develop tools and methodologies as appropriate to solve problems help improve the department.
  • Select the right tools that will enable safe movement and positioning of heavy objects / select and attach gear, braces and cushions according to weight and distribution of load.
  • Control movement of heavy objects / equipment through narrow openings and confined spaces, using jacks, pulley blocks, chain falls, and rollers.
  • Install hooks, swivels, and turn buckles in rigging.
  • Responsible for anchor chain removal and installation / anchor chain measurements and documentation.
  • Signal to workers operating cranes or other equipment to move load.
  • Train and supervise lower-level mechanics and semi-skilled employees.
  • Ensure that all machinery is set, aligned, and leveled.
  • Attach and detach loads properly.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform tests and inspections on the following equipment:
    • Boat Davits and life boats
    • Crane
    • Anchor Chains
    • Bits and Bollards
    • Pad eyes and tie downs
    • Deck equipment
  • Monitor and maintain all rigging equipment to ensure safety.
  • Report all safety concerns/issues to management immediately.
  • Safely and properly attach and utilize all pulley and block systems.
  • Set up and break down necessary equipment.
  • Properly select correct gear for the job.
  • Maneuver loads through difficult and confined spaces.
  • Other duties may be assigned as workload dictates.
  • Understand and act upon instruction / work independently to complete responsibilities.
  • Maintain all rigging gear in good working order.
  • Estimate the weight of objects that are subject to lift/rig.
  • Complete assigned projects with the use of specifications and drawings.
  • Conduct weight testing with no supervision.
  • Plan and communicate step by step procedures.
  • Coordinate with other trades and subcontractors.
  • Manage multiple rigging jobs at the same time.
Qualifications:
  • Must have at least five (5) years of shipboard or industrial fabrication (shop) rigging experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following required: operation of overhead cranes, operation of mobile cranes, and/or operations of heavy mobile equipment (ie. forklifts, combilifts, telescope handlers, electric boat trailers, shipyard transporters, and hustlers).
  • Must be up to date, and willing to comply with all OSHA safety standards
  • Must possess working knowledge of weight testing IAW specified Tech manuals for equipment such as Cranes, Davits, Winches, Anchors, and anchor chains, etc… within safety guidelines.
  • Must be able to complete a task with minimum to no supervision.
  • Must have knowledge of blueprints, reading specs, test memos, and standard items.
  • Must have knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the rigging trade.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker.
  • Must have excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance.
  • The Lead Mechanic will have hands on experience and a thorough knowledge with:
    • Crane signal skills, safe rigging practices, setting gangways and platforms, staging erection inspections, ships mooring, material handling, calculating center of gravity, wire size and application, nylon size and application, shackle size and application, chain size and application, chain falls and application, beam clamp type and size, antenna removal and installation, deck machinery and installation, plate and structure installation, cranes/Davits/booms install, fendering removal and installation, hatch and door removal and installation, towing bridles removal and installation, cargo valves, hoses removal and installation, and cargo handling equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience performing successful crane and rigging operations within a fabrication shop environment highly preferred.
  • Prefer knowledge and experience with underwater hull rigging of shafting, propellers, rudders, etc.
Security Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship Required.
  • Ability to obtain DBIDS preferred.
Travel Requirements:
  • Frequent Travel; 50% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs.
  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.
