Contract | Outside IR35 | UK Shipyard Environment
Broadreach Recruitment is supporting a UK-based commercial marine engineering project and is seeking an experienced Marine Mechanical Fitter for a contract position (Outside IR35).
This role is focused on new vessel construction and machinery installation, with scope across propulsion, auxiliary systems and engine room outfitting. Candidates must be eligible to obtain basic security clearance.
You will be working within a shipyard environment, carrying out the installation, maintenance and commissioning of mechanical and auxiliary systems on new-build vessels.
The role is hands-on and technically demanding, suited to experienced marine fitters who are confident working from drawings, fault-finding, and completing mechanical installations to a high standard.
Key responsibilities include:
Installation of new equipment including propulsion machinery and auxiliary systems
Maintenance and repair of commercial marine engines and gearboxes
Fault-finding on fuel oil, lubricating oil, air and filtration systems
Installation and alignment of propeller shaft systems, couplings, mounts and glands
Fitting and maintenance of overboard, sea suction and engine room piping systems
Working with generators and associated control systems (single and three phase)
Maintaining hydraulic systems for steering gear and deck equipment
Dismantling defective machinery using hand and power tools for repair and rectification
Inspecting and measuring components for wear, misalignment or defects
Replacing worn or defective mechanical and hydraulic components
Cutting, threading and installing new hydraulic and air pipework
Testing machinery following repair with an understanding of operating pressures and temperatures
Carrying out basic repairs using brazing, soldering and welding techniques
Working from design drawings and technical documentation
Safe isolation of equipment undergoing maintenance
Essential:
Time-served Marine Mechanical Fitter or equivalent
Proven experience in commercial marine or shipyard environments
Strong understanding of mechanical installation and maintenance practices
Ability to read and work from technical drawings and manuals
Hands-on experience with welding tools and materials
Good understanding of welding techniques and methods of installation
Fundamental electrical knowledge (12–24V systems)
Good understanding of basic mathematics
Strong safety awareness and willingness to follow safety procedures
Contract position - 6-9 months
