The Role
The purpose of the role is to oversee all Welding and Fabrication activities. Key aspects of
this are ensuring that Safety and Quality are maintained through out the Fabrication and
Welding process. The role holder will promote a forward thinking, continuous improvement
culture. The Manager will be a key figure for management and leadership within the area and
is vital to the success of the department and wider business.
Key responsibilities will include:
Line Management:
- Direct line management for Welding and Fabrication.
- First point of contact for any grievance and disciplinary matters.
- First point of contact for absence management and holiday authorization.
Technical and Operational Leadership:
- Supervise and co-ordinate day to day Fabrication, Welding and Cladding operations
and activities.
- Clearly communicate and co-ordinate inspection and sub-con requirements for both the short- and long-term plan.
- Provide key technical input to the team to ensure clarity of technical, process and customer specifications.
- Support the development of WPQR’s
- Assess welder Qualifications in line with scheduled workload operations.
- Will work closely with the Production Engineering and Engineering team to ensure the business is set up for success in Fabrication and welding.
Team Supervision and Development:
- Lead a team of skilled Fabricators, Welders and Cladders.
- Identify Mentoring and Development opportunities for the team, groups and individuals.
- Manage the Apprenticeship program within the Welding Department.
- Schedule resources and prioritise workloads based on Project and business demands.
- Ensure roles and responsibilities are clear within the area.
- Ensure paper work and documentation adheres to procedures and standards.
- Co-ordinate preventative and reactive maintenance for the Fabrication and Welding Department.
- Ensure the required consumables are communicated with stores to ensure the correct booking in and out of items is completed. (Gas, Wire, torch components etc.)
Compliance and Quality Control:
- Ensure department adherence and compliance with business policies and procedures.
- Ensure department adherence and compliance with all Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure department adherence and compliance with industry and customer standards. (ISO, DEF-STAN, BS EN, NAVSEA etc.)
- Provide update sessions and training on changes to standards, operating procedures etc.
- Ensure Department equipment and plant can achieve and maintain manufacturing levels.
- Conduct reviews to determine root cause, corrective and preventative measure with non-conforming equipment.
Process Improvement and Innovation:
- Oversee lean manufacturing principal’s introduction and improvement.
- Identify key areas for improvement within the department
- Record and report positive and negative findings during manufacture to drive Design for Manufacture decisions.
- Review manufacturing process with an aim of reducing cost and time while maintaining quality.
Measures and Performance:
- Manage and maintain department measures such as delivery performance, rework, RCCP, overloads etc.
- Manage and maintain performance of team in line with company policies and procedures
Required:
Minimum 3 Years experience in a similar management/ supervisory role.
· Have experience of reading engineering/technical drawings and documentation.
· Clear understanding of welding/ welder codes and standards.
· Have a mindset that promotes health and safety.
· Have excellent communications and organisational skills.
· Be flexible and adaptable to change.
· Be self-motivated with a good work ethic and attention to detail is essential.
· Experienced in the use of Microsoft packages
Qualifications:
Essential
· Be a time served welder or similar having served a recognised Apprenticeship.
· Hold an NC, HNC or HND in a relevant Engineering Discipline
